Information
|
Gypsophila is a popular flowering
plant, more often seen in floristry than gardening. They are a tender and
delicate annual. They are very easy to grow, and quick to bloom. The
delicate, thin stems of gypsophila plants are covered with an abundance of
small button-shaped flowers, each 3-10mm across, with five small petals on
each. Gypsophila plants grow 1 to 2
feet and their leaves are opposite, linear to narrow triangular, often
falcate (sickle-shaped), 1-7 cm long and 2-8 mm broad.. The stems separate
into many branches, giving them a light appearance, perfect for accenting
bouquets. The most popular variety is probably called “million star”. Two other varieties
commonly found are “new love” and “party
time”. Great plant for flower arranging or simply in a vase.

Growing Tips
|
Gypsophila can be propagated by
seeds. The seeds can be directly sown into flower gardens or grown indoors
for a jump start on the year. Sow them after the soil has begun to warm in
the spring. Plants should be spaced about eight inches apart. Gypsophila
plants grow rapidly, hence they should be watered during dry periods. Add a
general purpose fertilizer before planting if the soil is poor. Once they
germinate, they will grow rapidly. For a continuous bloom, plant them in
succession every two to three weeks. Provide protection from strong winds and add compost or
manure to the soil for stronger flowers. Pull up the plants as soon as the
flowers fade.

Common Problems
|
Insect and disease problems are
not too common. If insect or disease problems occur, treat early with organic
or chemical insect repellents and fungicide.
